When it comes to firefighting, youâd think water hoses and fire trucks would be the essentials. But Brian Fennessy, a seasoned California fire chief, had to improvise with, well, a carton of milk and beers. (Yes, really.)
It all went down in Altadena during the raging Eaton Fire, which tore through the canyon, leaving buildings charred and residents scrambling for safety. Hearing about the fire, Fennessy raced to check on his brotherâs homeâonly to get the good news on his way there: his brother and family had already evacuated. But that didnât stop him from swinging by to survey the damage.
The Hero Move Nobody Saw Coming
Arriving in a neighborhood that looked like a scene from an apocalypse movie, Fennessy spotted something unusual: his brotherâs home (and the neighborâs) were miraculously still standing. But not for longâflames were licking at the gas meter behind his brotherâs house.
Now, hereâs where things get wild. Fennessy found a garden hose, but surprise: no water. Time to channel his inner MacGyver. He opened the fridge to look for anything remotely useful and discovered a carton of milk and a couple of beers. Armed with dairy and suds, he dashed back to the fiery gas meter, cooling things down just enough to prevent disaster.
âI wasnât sure if it was going to rekindle, but it was all I could do,â Fennessy told media.

Spoiler Alert: It Worked
Miraculously, the milk-and-beer strategy was enough to save the day. When the flames finally settled, Fennessyâs brotherâs house and the neighborâs were the only two homes still standing in the entire neighborhood.
For Fennessy, whoâs seen it all during his nearly 50-year firefighting career, this was a first. âItâs not exactly textbook firefighting,â he joked, âbut sometimes you just have to work with what youâve got.â
Moral of the Story?
Never underestimate the power of quick thinkingâand maybe keep your fridge stocked with emergency milk and beers.
