Captain America: Brave New World Tops a Slow Weekend Box Office

LOS ANGELES – Disney and Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World continues to dominate the box office, despite seeing a significant drop in its second week of release. The film earned an estimated $15 million this weekend, maintaining its position at the top of the charts despite a weak overall box office performance.

The Anthony Mackie-led Captain America opened strong with around $120 million during its debut on a three-day weekend last month. However, the film faced a steep decline, bringing in only $28.2 million last week, marking one of the biggest second-week drops for a Marvel movie. Since its release, the film has earned a total of $163.7 million.

Despite mixed reviews from critics and audiences, Captain America still has a chance to perform well throughout March, with minimal competition in the coming weeks. The Marvel franchise reset that many had hoped for now shifts to Thunderbolts in May and Fantastic Four: First Steps in July.

New Releases Struggle at the Box Office

The weekend’s only significant new release, Focus Features’ Last Breath, earned $7.8 million. This adventure film, based on a true story, stars Woody Harrelson, Simi Liu, and Chris Lemons. It tells the harrowing tale of a young diver stranded 300 feet below the surface during a routine deep-sea mission. The film received strong reviews, with Lindsey Bahr of The Associated Press calling it a “white-knuckle experience” filled with “pure suspense and anxiety.”

Indie Films and Animated Success

At No. 3, The Monkey, directed by Oz Perkins, grossed $6.4 million, bringing its total to $24.6 million after two weeks. This film is a notable success for indie distributor Neon, known for its collaborations with Perkins. The Monkey continues to perform well and represents the growing success of low-budget indie films.

Meanwhile, Paddington in Peru took fourth place with $4.5 million on its third weekend, bringing its total earnings to $31.4 million. The beloved bear’s latest adventure continues to perform consistently well.
