LONDON and ROME – Pope Francis spent his 27th consecutive day in the hospital today, with the Vatican confirming that his health has shown positive progress overnight. The 88-year-old pontiff is being treated for bilateral pneumonia at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, where he was admitted on February 14.
The Vatican issued a statement on Monday, announcing that the pope’s prognosis had been “lifted,” meaning he is no longer in imminent danger. However, they noted that his clinical picture remains complex and that further medical treatment is required.
Ongoing Treatment and Monitoring
The Holy See stated that Pope Francis will continue receiving pharmacological medical therapy for several more days due to the complexities of his condition. Despite the improvements in his condition, including better results from blood tests and a positive response to medication, the Vatican cautioned that further monitoring is needed.
“The improvements recorded in previous days have further consolidated, as confirmed by both blood tests and clinical objectivity and the good response to pharmacological therapy,” the statement read.

A Milestone in the Papacy
Thursday will mark the 12th anniversary of Pope Francis’ election as the leader of the Catholic Church. He succeeded Pope Benedict XVI, who became the first pope to resign in nearly 600 years.
Though there is progress in Pope Francis’ recovery, the Vatican stressed that caution remains, and his doctors continue to monitor his condition closely.
