George Wendt, Iconic ‘Cheers’ Actor Who Played Norm Peterson, Dies at 76

George Wendt, the actor best known for portraying Norm Peterson on the long-running NBC sitcom Cheers, has died at the age of 76.

A family representative confirmed to media on Tuesday that Wendt “died peacefully in his sleep while at home.”

“George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him,” the representative said. “He will be missed forever.”

Emmy-Nominated for His Iconic Role

Wendt earned six Emmy nominations for his portrayal of the affable barfly Norm, appearing in all 275 episodes of Cheers from its premiere in 1982 until the series finale in 1993.

In a 2021 interview with Chicago Magazine, Wendt reflected on his first audition for the show, joking, “I needed to look like a guy who wanted to have another beer.” He added that he was much like Norm himself—only the character had “better writing.”

A Career Rooted in Comedy

Born on October 17, 1948, in Chicago, Wendt began his career in comedy at the legendary Second City theater. Before landing his career-defining role on Cheers, he made appearances in classic TV series including MASH*, Taxi, and Soap.

Following the success of Cheers, Wendt headlined the short-lived George Wendt Show in 1995 and made guest appearances on Saturday Night Live, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, George Lopez, and Frasier, reprising his role as Norm in the latter.

His film credits include Fletch (1985), Guilt by Suspicion (1991) with Robert De Niro, and Forever Young (1992) alongside Mel Gibson. He also had cameos in The Little Rascals and Spice World.

Wendt took on several television movie roles as well, including Alice in Wonderland (1999), Strange Relations (2001), and Santa Baby (2006).

Family and Legacy

Wendt married Bernadette Birkett in 1978, whom he met while performing at Second City. The couple shared three children: daughter Hilary and sons Joe and Daniel.

He was also the uncle and godfather of actor Jason Sudeikis.

George Wendt leaves behind a legacy of laughter, warmth, and unforgettable television moments.
