OREGON — The United States Coast Guard has suspended its search for a missing fisherman after a 40-foot commercial vessel capsized in dangerous conditions off the Oregon coast, officials confirmed Monday.
Vessel Overturns in Rough Conditions
At approximately 4 p.m. on Sunday, Coast Guard Sector Columbia River received reports that the fishing boat Das Bug had taken on water while navigating through the Yaquina Bay Jetty. Heavy winds and 7-foot swells caused the vessel to overturn, throwing all four crew members into the water.

A 47-foot Motor Lifeboat crew from Coast Guard Station Yaquina Bay rescued three individuals from the water. They were transferred to emergency medical services and taken to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital, where they were treated for hypothermia.
An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station North Bend joined search efforts for the missing crew member, conducting aerial sweeps through Sunday evening.

Search Efforts and Suspension
A first-light search was launched Monday morning using the same helicopter unit, but after covering 54 square miles over eight hours in challenging conditions — including 13-knot winds — the missing fisherman could not be located.
“Suspending a search without finding the person you have been looking for is always one of the most difficult decisions we have to make,” said Lt. Cdr. Jacqueline Hunnicutt, search and rescue mission coordinator for Coast Guard Sector Columbia River. “Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
The Coast Guard has urged mariners to exercise caution in the area due to continued hazardous sea conditions.
