Actress Sofia Vergara was forced to miss the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday after experiencing an unexpected and severe eye allergy just before leaving for the ceremony.
Vergara, best known for her role in Modern Family and her recent lead performance in Netflix’s Griselda, shared the news with fans on Instagram.

In her post, Vergara shared two photos and a video showing herself flushing out her right eye.
“Didn’t make it to the Emmys but made it to the ER 🤣😩 sorry I had to cancel! Craziest eye allergie right before getting in the car! 🤣🤣,” she wrote.
Vergara had been scheduled as one of nearly 40 presenters at this year’s awards.
Understanding Eye Allergies
According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, eye allergies—also known as allergic conjunctivitis—can be triggered by dust, mold, pollen, pet dander, smoke, cosmetics, eye drops, food, or even insect bites.
Common symptoms include:
- Red, itchy, or swollen eyes
- Burning or tearing sensations
- Sensitivity to light
- Nasal symptoms such as sneezing, congestion, or sore throat when combined with seasonal allergies
Treatment often involves antihistamines, specialized eye drops, steroids, or allergy shots, depending on severity and frequency.
