Tamil Nadu stampede at Vijay rally leaves 40 dead and over 120 injured

At least 40 people have been killed and 124 injured in a Tamil Nadu stampede during a political rally for actor-turned-politician Vijay in Karur, officials confirmed on Sunday.

Rising death toll after rally chaos

State Health Minister Ma Subramanian told the Associated Press that 36 victims were declared dead on arrival at hospitals on Saturday night, while four more succumbed later. Among the dead were nine children. He added that most of the injured remain in stable condition.

Crowds swell under extreme heat

Tens of thousands gathered to hear Vijay, who is contesting Tamil Nadu’s 2026 state elections, despite sweltering conditions. The actor, known formally as Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, is among the state’s most popular stars and launched his own party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, after retiring from acting in 2024.

Local witnesses described hours of waiting in rising heat before Vijay’s late arrival. “Nobody could control it,” said textile businessman S. Sabesan, noting that many in the crowd fainted as the actor began speaking.

Lawyer R. Rajendaran said the situation worsened as Vijay departed the venue. “When he decided to leave and his vehicle started moving, commotion broke out as hundreds of fans chased his vehicle. That is what led to the stampede,” he explained.

Subramanian acknowledged “indiscipline” at the rally and confirmed that the government has ordered an inquiry led by a retired judge, with findings expected in one month.

Political and public response

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced compensation of over $11,000 for families of the deceased. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the event “deeply saddening” in a public statement.

Vijay expressed grief hours after the tragedy. “My heart is shattered,” he posted on X. “I am writhing in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow that words cannot express.”

Stampede risks remain a national concern

India has a long history of deadly crowd surges, particularly at religious and political gatherings. In January, at least 30 people were killed in a stampede during the Maha Kumbh festival, the world’s largest religious congregation.
