Los Angeles City Hall was evacuated on Friday afternoon after a car slammed into the steps of the historic building. The driver was taken into police custody, according to officials.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) confirmed that no injuries were reported. Mayor Karen Bass posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the LAPD bomb squad arrived on scene as a precaution, but assured residents that the situation had been “safely resolved.”
Evacuation Ordered “Out of an Abundance of Caution”
Mayor Bass stated that City Hall was evacuated out of caution while authorities assessed the situation. Police responded just after 4 p.m. to reports of a traffic collision, said LAPD spokesperson Charles Miller.
Video from news helicopters showed the driver remaining inside the vehicle for some time before emerging with arms raised toward a line of police and fire personnel. He was later handcuffed and escorted away by officers.

Details and Motive Under Investigation
The circumstances leading up to the crash remain very unclear. Footage revealed a cardboard sign displayed in the car’s window reading, “I need ur help,” with a reference to President Donald Trump.
Mayor Bass expressed gratitude to first responders on X, writing, “Thank you to all of the brave first responders who safely resolved this situation with compassion and urgency.”
Authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the crash at Los Angeles City Hall, as officials confirm that there was no active threat to the public following the incident.
