A family trip to Panther Creek almost became a holiday nightmare after a 12-year-old girl was buried by collapsing sand on Thursday afternoon. The Texas sand collapse rescue unfolded when the girl dug a hole in a sandbar, which suddenly gave way and trapped her, officials said.
According to the Woodlands Fire Department, the girl’s father acted immediately, clearing sand from around her head to help her breathe while waiting for emergency crews to arrive.

When responders reached the scene, they found the girl with only her head and face visible. Firefighters and emergency personnel from several agencies worked together to shore up the unstable sand before carefully digging her out.
