As Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) continues to shake up federal agencies, the billionaire entrepreneur has now turned his attention to the U.S. gold reserves stored at Fort Knox.
Musk, who has been openly questioning government operations, took to X (formerly Twitter) in recent days to cast doubt on whether the gold is still inside the United States Bullion Depository at Fort Knox, Kentucky. The facility reportedly holds 147.3 million ounces of gold, according to the U.S. Mint.
Musk Raises Concerns Over U.S. Gold Supply
Posting on X, Musk suggested that Americans deserve confirmation that their gold reserves are intact, writing:
“This gold is the property of the American people. I sure hope it’s still there!”
He followed up with another pointed question:
“Who is confirming that gold wasn’t stolen from Fort Knox?”

Fort Knox: A Vault of Mystery
The last known high-profile visit to Fort Knox was in 2017, when former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin toured the facility during Donald Trump’s first administration. Before that, the vault had not been opened to journalists and a congressional delegation since 1974.
According to the U.S. Mint, the Treasury Secretary allows visits “when rumors persist that all the gold has been removed from the vaults.”
Musk’s posts have reignited long-standing conspiracy theories about the true state of America’s gold reserves, with some questioning whether the government still possesses the massive stockpile.

Musk Suggests Live-Streaming a Fort Knox Walkthrough
Musk’s curiosity took an even bolder turn on Monday when he floated the idea of a live-streamed walkthrough of Fort Knox.
Responding to conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, who had been covering Musk’s comments, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO suggested that he would like to film inside the vaults himself.
While the feasibility of such an event remains uncertain, Musk’s willingness to challenge government transparency continues to stir debate, especially as his DOGE initiative exerts increasing influence over federal agencies like the Social Security Administration and the Internal Revenue Service.
With Musk now questioning the integrity of America’s gold reserves, it remains to be seen whether his Fort Knox crusade will lead to a public inspection—or remain another chapter in his ongoing clash with federal authorities.
