Chocolate recall: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has officially upgraded the recall of Cal Yee Farm LLC’s chocolate-covered products to a Class I recall, the highest risk level, due to multiple undeclared allergens.
The FDA issued this update on January 22, 2025, warning that consuming these products could result in serious or life-threatening allergic reactions.
Initial Recall and Affected Products
The California-based food manufacturer first announced the recall on December 12, 2024, affecting a range of:
- Chocolate-covered products
- Yogurt-covered products
- Dried fruit, nut mixes, and other snacks
These items were found to contain undeclared milk, soy, wheat, sesame, FD&C #6, and almonds—common allergens that can trigger severe reactions in sensitive individuals.
“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk, soy, wheat, sesame, FD&C #6, and almonds run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” Cal Yee Farm stated in its original recall announcement.
FDA Inspection Led to Recall
The recall was initiated after an FDA inspection of Cal Yee Farm’s facility revealed that products containing these allergens were being distributed without proper labeling.
As a result, the FDA classified this recall as Class I, meaning there is “a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”

Where Were the Recalled Products Sold?
Cal Yee Farm distributed the recalled items in nine states through retail stores and online sales:
- California
- Arizona
- Virginia
- New Mexico
- Texas
- Tennessee
- Oregon
- Ohio
- Pennsylvania
Company Response
Following the recall, Cal Yee Farm updated its product labels to comply with FDA allergen labeling standards.
“We did a voluntary recall on products with undeclared allergens. Labels have been corrected and meet FDA allergen labeling standards,” the company stated on its website.
A Cal Yee Farm representative has not responded to media requests for further comment regarding the FDA’s new classification.
Product Details
The recalled Cal Yee’s and Cal Yee Farm-branded products were packaged in clear plastic zippered pouches in the following sizes:
- 8 oz
- 1 lb
- 2 lb
- 5 lb
Each package featured a bright yellow label on the front identifying the product, while a small white label containing a UPC code was on the back.
The Dark Chocolate Apricots were sold in two types of plastic containers with either a white or yellow label and a UPC code on the back.
