Isar Aerospace Reaches Orbit From European Soil

A rocket has reached orbit from Western European soil for the first time. “This is right now making history – making history for Spectrum, making history for Isar, making history for Europe,” Spectrum chief engineer Nikolaos Perakis said during the launch webcast, produced with NASASpaceflight. “I’m incredibly proud of this massive achievement.”

What flew, and where it went

The mission, named “Onward and Upward,” carried five cubesats and one non-deployable scientific experiment – a real payload, unlike the debut flight, which flew empty for good reason.

Reaching orbit was not the end of the checklist. The initial orbit was elliptical, with a closest approach of about 112 miles (180 km) and a high point of 311 miles (500 km), and the upper stage had to perform a circularization burn before the satellites could be released. Isar confirmed on X roughly two hours after liftoff that deployment had gone as planned, which is the point at which the flight qualified as a full mission success rather than a successful launch.

Eighteen months of failure and scrubs

Spectrum’s first flight, “Going Full Spectrum,” lifted off from the same pad in March 2025 and came crashing back to Earth in less than a minute. Isar completed its investigation within two months and published the cause plainly: “The findings identified an unintended opening of the vent valve and a loss of attitude control at the start of the roll maneuver as the initiating events that led to the in-flight failure.”

Getting back to the pad took far longer than fixing the valve. Flight two was scheduled for January and slipped on a pressurization valve issue. March attempts died to bad weather and a boat that wandered into the range. An April 9 try was scrubbed over a leak in a composite overwrapped pressure vessel. On June 15 the company stood down after “detecting off-nominal behavior in the vehicle’s fluid systems.”

“We had some delays, obviously,” Perakis said. “We had some setbacks, but we came back stronger from them. And it validates this tremendous amount of engineering across all the teams, and that’s what brings us into orbit.”

Why “Western European soil” is the precise claim

The record needs its qualifier. Orbital launches have taken place from European territory for about six decades – from Plesetsk Cosmodrome, in the Russian part of the continent. Europe’s own institutional launches fly from Kourou in French Guiana, on the northeast coast of South America, chosen decades ago because a site near the equator buys extra velocity for free.

What had never happened was an orbital launch from the European mainland or its western periphery. Andoya sits inside the Arctic Circle, which is a poor place to reach an equatorial orbit and an excellent one to reach a polar or sun-synchronous orbit – the orbits Earth-observation constellations actually use. The geography is a constraint that happens to match the market.

The business behind the milestone

Spectrum is a two-stage rocket standing 95 feet (28 meters) tall and capable of lifting about 2,200 pounds (1,000 kg) to low Earth orbit. That places it in the small-to-medium launcher class, below the workhorse rideshare vehicles and above the microlaunchers that have struggled to find business.

Isar’s ambition is industrial rather than ceremonial: the company says its manufacturing facility near Munich can produce more than 30 rockets a year. Whether it ever needs that capacity depends on European institutional and commercial customers deciding to buy launches from a company with one successful flight, in a market where the dominant provider offers cheaper cost per kilogram on shared missions.

Sovereignty is the argument that fills the gap. European governments have spent three years discovering how uncomfortable it is to depend on foreign launch providers for satellites they consider strategic, and a domestic vehicle that can reach polar orbit from Norwegian soil answers that discomfort directly.

What comes next

“Flight 2 is a big, big milestone, big success,” Perakis said. “But this is just the beginning. So I’m really looking forward to the next steps.”

The next steps are the hard ones. A single orbital success proves the design closes; a launch business requires flying repeatedly, on schedule, at a price customers accept. The gap between those two things has ended more rocket companies than any technical failure, and it is the one Isar now has to cross, as Space.com reported from the launch.
