Yaccarino Announces Resignation from X
Linda Yaccarino, the CEO of X (formerly Twitter), has announced her resignation from the social media company, marking the end of her two-year tenure under owner Elon Musk. Yaccarino made the announcement in a post on X, expressing gratitude to Musk and highlighting her role in executing his vision for the platform.
“I’m immensely grateful to [Musk] for entrusting me with the responsibility of protecting free speech, turning the company around, and transforming X into the Everything App,” she wrote.
From Advertising Executive to CEO of X
Yaccarino joined X in May 2023, shortly after Musk acquired the company for $44 billion. She had previously spent nearly 12 years at NBCUniversal, where she rose to become Chairman of Global Advertising and Partnerships, overseeing a team of 2,000 employees.
Prior to that, she held an executive role at Turner Broadcasting Company for nearly two decades, making her one of the most influential figures in media and advertising before her jump into tech.

Challenges in a Post-Twitter Era
Yaccarino stepped into her role at a time when X was struggling with a steep drop in advertising revenue and growing concerns about content moderation. Shortly after Musk’s acquisition, the platform faced a widespread advertiser boycott over concerns related to hate speech and brand safety.
“We started with the critical early work necessary to prioritize the safety of our users—especially children—and to restore advertiser confidence,” Yaccarino wrote in her farewell post.
Musk himself admitted in July 2023 that ad revenue had dropped by 50%, adding to the pressure on the newly appointed CEO.

Achievements During Her Tenure
Despite the rocky start, Yaccarino emphasized several key innovations launched under her leadership, including:
- Community Notes: A crowdsourced fact-checking system to improve platform credibility
- X Money (upcoming): A fintech initiative meant to support Musk’s ambition of building an “Everything App”
- Bringing high-profile voices and content creators to X, enhancing its status as a digital public square
Musk replied briefly to her announcement, saying:
“Thank you for your contributions.”
Musk’s Evolving Role and Yaccarino’s Legacy
When Musk named Yaccarino CEO, he transitioned into a role as Executive Chairman and CTO, but he remained highly active on the platform, where he commands a following of over 222 million users.
At the time, Musk had joked he was looking for someone “foolish enough to take the job” — a sentiment echoed by the tech community given the platform’s challenges.
Yaccarino’s tenure is now seen as a pivotal chapter in the post-Twitter era, marked by both strategic pivots and reputational hurdles.
What’s Next for Yaccarino?
While Yaccarino has not revealed her next move, she indicated she would continue to use the platform.
“I’ll be cheering you all on as you continue to change the world,” she said. “As always, I’ll see you on 𝕏.”
Her resignation raises questions about the next phase of leadership at X and how the platform will evolve amid its push to become a multi-functional “Everything App”, blending social, financial, and entertainment services.
