Fatal Maharashtra Bridge Collapse at Popular Tourist Spot
At least two people died and 32 others were injured after an iron bridge collapsed on Sunday over a river in Maharashtra’s Pune district, state officials confirmed. The Maharashtra bridge collapse occurred at the Kundamala area, a well-known tourist destination.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis shared on social media that six individuals remain hospitalized in critical condition, while six people were rescued from the swollen river. Multiple tourists were reportedly on the bridge when it gave way, plunging many into the fast-flowing waters.
Rescue Efforts and Search Operations Underway
Authorities have launched an intense search and rescue operation to locate missing individuals swept away by the river’s strong currents. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), along with other emergency teams, are actively involved in recovery efforts.
Although the region has experienced heavy rains in recent days, the bridge collapsed when there was no rainfall, increasing concerns over the structure’s stability amid high river flow.

Infrastructure Safety Concerns in India
This tragic event adds to ongoing concerns about infrastructure safety across India. The country has witnessed several devastating bridge and highway failures in recent years due to aging structures and maintenance challenges.
In 2022, a century-old cable suspension bridge in Gujarat collapsed, killing at least 132 people and injuring hundreds, marking one of India’s worst recent bridge disasters.
Maharashtra Officials Urge Caution and Infrastructure Review
State officials have called for urgent assessments of similar bridges to prevent further tragedies and pledged support for victims and their families as rescue efforts continue.
Tourists and locals alike are urged to exercise caution in areas affected by recent rains and swollen rivers, especially around vulnerable infrastructure such as bridges.
