According to a criminal complaint filed in federal court, investigators allege that Rinderknecht used an open flame, likely a lighter, to ignite vegetation or paper in a brush area overlooking the Pacific Palisades. Despite early containment, embers continued to smolder underground, later sparking the massive wildfire that became one of Los Angeles’ most destructive in recent history.
Authorities say the blaze destroyed entire blocks, forced thousands of residents to evacuate, and left 12 people dead.
Digital Evidence and ChatGPT Image
During an earlier news briefing, Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said investigators uncovered digital evidence linking Rinderknecht to the act — including an AI-generated image created using ChatGPT in July 2024 that depicted “a burning forest and a crowd fleeing from it.”
While officials have not yet identified a motive, the DOJ said the AI-generated image was included as part of a broader set of digital evidence that suggested premeditation.

Next Steps in the Case
Rinderknecht is currently in federal custody and expected to be arraigned in U.S. District Court in downtown Los Angeles in the coming weeks. The Justice Department confirmed the investigation remains ongoing in coordination with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and Cal Fire.
If convicted on all counts, Rinderknecht could face up to 45 years in prison.
