Officials confirmed Sanford’s vehicle displayed an Iraq War veteran license plate, drawing immediate attention to his military service.
According to the United States Marine Corps, Sanford served from June 2004 to June 2008, reaching the rank of sergeant. He completed a combat tour in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2007, returning just three months before leaving the service.
Sanford specialized in combat logistics and vehicle recovery operations, responsible for maintaining and retrieving tactical and armored vehicles in support of Marine missions. He was last stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, before leaving the military in March 2008.
The Marine Corps described his service record as typical for his rank and role, with standard recognitions awarded during his enlistment.

Personal Life and Family
Online posts suggest Sanford was also a father to a young son who faced serious medical challenges after birth. Family members had previously shared updates on their child’s condition and treatment.
A photo posted on Sanford’s mother’s Facebook page appears to show him standing in front of the same truck used in Sunday’s attack.
