A gunman opened fire with a high-velocity rifle on a group standing along a Minneapolis sidewalk Tuesday, killing one person and injuring six others, according to police. Police Chief Brian O’Hara called the incident “deeply troubling,” adding that at least one victim appeared to be the intended target.
“This level of firepower unleashed in broad daylight is completely sickening and unacceptable,” O’Hara said during a press briefing.
Victims Targeted Outside Catholic High School
Authorities said the shooting took place across the street from a Catholic high school. Minneapolis police were alerted around 1:30 p.m. by the city’s ShotSpotter gunshot detection system, which detected approximately 30 rounds of gunfire.
Responding officers discovered one man dead at the scene. Six additional victims, all adults, were found in the surrounding area, including at local businesses. Despite severe injuries, all six are expected to survive, police confirmed.

High-Velocity Rifle Confirmed
Based on ShotSpotter data and the nature of the injuries, investigators believe the suspect used a high-velocity rifle.
“The damage that was done to the bodies of some of these victims is unspeakable,” O’Hara said. “Thankfully, we don’t have more people that are dead from this incident.”
Several parked vehicles were also struck during the attack.
Gunman Remains at Large
Police believe there was only one shooter, who stood about 15 yards from the group before fleeing the scene in a vehicle. Authorities are working to confirm the suspect’s identity.
“We’re doing everything we possibly can to identify those who are responsible for this violence,” O’Hara said, urging witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
