ROME – Pope Francis’ prognosis was officially lifted on Monday, marking his 25th consecutive day in the hospital, according to a statement from the Vatican.
“The improvements recorded in previous days have further consolidated, as confirmed by both blood tests and clinical objectivity and the good response to pharmacological therapy. For these reasons, the doctors decided to lift the prognosis,” the Holy See said in a press release.
While this indicates that the pope is no longer in immediate danger, Vatican sources told ABC News that his overall clinical condition remains complex.
Continued Medical Treatment Despite Improvement
Despite his improving health, the 88-year-old pontiff will continue to receive medical treatment in a hospital setting for the foreseeable future. The Vatican cited the complexity of his condition and the significant infection he presented upon hospitalization as reasons for ongoing care.
“Francis’ doctors report positive signs of recovery, but they remain cautious about his condition,” Vatican sources confirmed.
As part of his treatment plan, Pope Francis will transition back to noninvasive mechanical ventilation and continue his antibiotic therapy.
Pope Francis Maintains Spiritual Exercises
Even in the hospital, the pope has remained dedicated to his spiritual duties. On Monday morning, he participated in Lenten spiritual exercises for the Roman Curia, received the Eucharist, and later prayed in the chapel of his private apartment.
According to the Vatican, Francis continued his participation in the spiritual exercises via video link, spending his afternoon alternating between prayer and rest.

Pope Francis Expresses Gratitude to Medical Staff
On Sunday, Pope Francis released a written version of his Angelus address, in which he expressed deep gratitude toward the doctors and nurses caring for him at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.
“During my prolonged hospitalization here, I too experience the thoughtfulness of service and the tenderness of care, in particular from the doctors and health care workers, whom I thank from the bottom of my heart,” he wrote.
