Runaway Kangaroo Causes Highway Chaos in Alabama

A runaway kangaroo caused a surprising scene on Tuesday when it ventured onto Interstate 85 in Macon County, Alabama. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) responded to a two-vehicle crash in the southbound lane near mile marker 46 after reports that a kangaroo had interrupted traffic.

Highway Shut Down as Recovery Efforts Begin

Authorities temporarily shut down both northbound and southbound lanes of I-85 in an attempt to safely capture the animal, which they believe may have played a role in the collision. Fortunately, the kangaroo—later identified as Sheila—was not injured.

“Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division, along with the animal’s owner, conducted a recovery of the kangaroo,” officials confirmed in a statement.

How Did Sheila Escape?

While details about how Sheila managed to escape remain unclear, her owner, Patrick Starr, told media that she broke free from her enclosure near the family’s pumpkin patch and petting zoo. Despite being part of the zoo, Sheila is actually Starr’s personal pet.

Safe and Sound at Home Again

Following her wild highway adventure, Sheila was examined by the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. She’s now back home, doing well.

“She’s back home safe. She’s up. She’s not sedated anymore. She’s eating. She’s drinking. She’s not injured,” Starr said. “She’s a sweet pet. I’m glad she’s back home, and I’m glad everybody slowed down a little bit.”

No Injuries, But Lots of Questions

Thankfully, no one was seriously hurt in the accident. As traffic on I-85 resumed, residents were left with quite the story—and one unforgettable example of how unpredictable life can be in Alabama.
