NEW YORK — Starbucks announced Tuesday that it will close 34 stores across New York City’s five boroughs as part of a sweeping $1 billion restructuring plan, marking one of the most significant shakeups in the chain’s urban presence.
The closures, first reported by The New York Times, include high-traffic spots in Manhattan such as 34th Street, University Place, and Columbus Avenue, as well as several Brooklyn and Queens locations.
Restructuring Driven by Sales Slump
Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol said the decision follows a broad review of sluggish sales performance in recent years. In a company memo, Niccol explained that closures would target stores where “we’re unable to create the physical environment our customers and partners expect, or where we don’t see a path to financial performance.”
The restructuring includes 900 layoffs across North America and is expected to result in a nearly 1% reduction in Starbucks’ total store count in the region.
Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens Hit Hard
In Manhattan, stores at 330 W. 34th St., 219 First Ave., and 159 Columbus Ave. are among those slated to close. Brooklyn will lose several busy shops, including those on Atlantic Avenue, Flatbush Avenue, and Hoyt Street. Queens faces closures in Astoria and Long Island City.
Niccol emphasized that while the company has made “good progress,” more work remains to make Starbucks “better, stronger, and more resilient.”
