President Donald Trump alleged during a tense Oval Office meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Wednesday that there is an ongoing white genocide in South Africa, reigniting a long-standing and controversial narrative.
The claim comes despite widespread condemnation and clear denials from South African officials, courts, and independent analysts.
Elon Musk Present During Heated Exchange
South African-born tech billionaire Elon Musk, a close adviser to Trump, was also present during the Oval Office meeting. Musk has previously supported the idea that white South Africans, particularly Afrikaner farmers, are fleeing due to “violence and racist laws.”
This alignment between Musk and Trump has added fuel to the narrative, even as courts and experts continue to debunk it.
South African Government and Courts Deny Genocide Claims
In February 2025, a South African court officially dismissed the concept of white genocide in South Africa as “not real” and “clearly imagined.” The ruling followed a case involving a proposed $2.1 million donation to the white supremacist group Boerelegioen, which the court blocked.
South Africa’s crime statistics do reflect a high national murder rate—about 45 per 100,000 people in 2023—but there is no evidence these crimes are racially targeted.
“There is criminality in our country,” Ramaphosa said. “People who do get killed, unfortunately, through criminal activity are not only white people. The majority of them are Black people.”

White House Issues Statement Supporting Trump’s Claim
Shortly after the meeting, the White House released a statement titled “President Trump is Right About What’s Happening in South Africa.” It referenced media coverage from Fox News, Breitbart, and the BBC to support Trump’s allegations, though many of the cited incidents lacked broader statistical context and involved isolated events.
Despite this, South African Presidential Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya rejected the claims, stating:
“There is no evidence of what’s being claimed here. The U.S. has very sophisticated intelligence… They’ll tell you that what is being propagated here is completely false.”
Afrikaner Refugees Fast-Tracked Under Trump Order
The Trump administration has already acted on its stance. Dozens of Afrikaner refugees arrived in the U.S. last week, admitted under a February executive order titled “Addressing Egregious Actions of the Republic of South Africa.”
The order asserts that the South African government has approved land seizures from ethnic minority Afrikaners without compensation, which Trump calls “a shocking disregard of its citizens’ rights.”
It also instructs the U.S. to withhold aid from South Africa and to promote resettlement of Afrikaner refugees in the United States.
White Genocide: Criticism Over Immigration Priorities
Critics have slammed Trump for focusing on white South African immigrants while simultaneously restricting asylum seekers and immigrants from Afghanistan, Venezuela, and Haiti.
This apparent double standard has sparked further debate about how the U.S. defines humanitarian need—and who it chooses to help.
