Warren Buffett Donation – $6 Billion in Berkshire Stock Given to Foundations

Buffett Announces Massive $6 Billion Donation in Berkshire Stock

In his latest Warren Buffett donation, the legendary investor revealed late Friday that he will distribute $6 billion worth of Berkshire Hathaway stock to five foundations. This brings his total charitable giving since 2006 to approximately $60 billion, based on the stock’s value when donated.

Buffett said the shares, totaling nearly 12.4 million Class B shares of Berkshire Hathaway, will be delivered Monday. Each Class B share closed Friday at $485.68. Unlike the pricey Class A shares, Class B shares offer a more accessible entry point for investors.

Gates Foundation Receives Largest Share of Buffett’s Gift

The largest portion of this Warren Buffett donation will go to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Trust, which will receive 9.4 million shares. The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation is set to receive 943,384 shares, while the Sherwood Foundation, Howard G. Buffett Foundation, and NoVo Foundation will each collect 660,366 shares.

Buffett’s history of giving to these organizations dates back nearly two decades. He shook the philanthropic world last year when he announced plans to halt donations to the Gates Foundation after his death, opting instead to let his three children determine the rest of his fortune’s distribution.

Buffett Reflects on His Wealth and Philanthropic Plans

Berkshire Hathaway’s Class B stock has surged 19.1% over the past year, easily outpacing the 14.1% return of the broader U.S. stock market, including dividends. Buffett’s reputation as a disciplined value investor, often waiting for the right moment to buy, has fueled his massive fortune, now estimated at around $145 billion—most of it in Berkshire shares.

“Nothing extraordinary has occurred at Berkshire; a very long runway, simple and generally sound decisions, the American tailwind and compounding effects produced my current wealth,” Buffett said in his statement announcing the Warren Buffett donation. “My will provides that about 99½% of my estate is destined for philanthropic usage.”

Buffett’s Giving Legacy Continues

Buffett’s generous gifts have solidified his status as one of the world’s most prominent philanthropists. His multi-billion-dollar donations reflect a broader movement among ultra-wealthy individuals pledging to give away substantial portions of their fortunes to charity.

His donations also underline the unique position Berkshire Hathaway occupies in the American economy, with iconic holdings including Geico and Dairy Queen, and highlight Buffett’s long-term commitment to giving back through thoughtful, large-scale philanthropy.
