China said Monday that the United States should not use other countries as a “pretext” to pursue its interests in Greenland, arguing that Beijing’s activities in the Arctic comply with international law. The comments came in response to questions about President Donald Trump’s renewed push to acquire Greenland, a semiautonomous region of NATO ally Denmark.
Trump renews call to “take Greenland” as tensions rise
Trump has argued the U.S. needs Greenland to prevent Russia or China from gaining influence over the vast Arctic island. In comments aboard Air Force One on Sunday, he said he would prefer to “make a deal,” but insisted, “one way or the other, we’re going to have Greenland.” The White House has been weighing options to acquire the territory, including the possibility of using military force.
Denmark and Greenland push back publicly
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has warned that an American takeover of Greenland would mark the end of NATO. Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and leaders of the four other parties in Greenland’s parliament issued a joint statement on Friday reiterating that Greenland’s future must be decided by its people and emphasizing their “wish that the United States’ contempt for our country ends.”

China points to “near-Arctic” role and regional interests
China declared itself a “near-Arctic state” in 2018 and has promoted plans for a “Polar Silk Road” under its Belt and Road Initiative. On Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said China’s activities in the Arctic are aimed at promoting peace, stability, and sustainable development, and should be respected in accordance with international law.
Washington talks are expected this week
Danish and Greenlandic envoys are expected in Washington this week for talks. Plans are also being developed for U.S. senators to visit Denmark.
