Sony Reaffirms Digital-First Strategy for PlayStation Platform
Sony Interactive Entertainment has signaled that it will not reverse course on its long-term strategy to phase out physical optical discs for future PlayStation hardware, despite growing pushback from physical media enthusiasts and video game collectors.

The company emphasized that digital distribution, cloud gaming, and direct-to-console downloads continue to account for an overwhelming majority of software revenue, driving the industry-wide shift away from traditional retail discs.
Consumer Pushback Over Ownership and Preservation
Gaming preservationists and physical media advocates have voiced concern over the move, pointing to issues surrounding digital game ownership, licensing rights, and the secondary used-game market. Many players argue that physical discs offer true ownership security that digital licenses cannot match.
Despite these criticisms, digital sales have continued to set record highs across both first-party and third-party publisher titles on the PlayStation Network.
The Broader Industry Shift Toward Digital-Only Ecosystems
Sony’s position aligns with broader trends across the video game industry, where major publishers and console manufacturers are reducing physical retail footprints. As digital storage capacities expand and high-speed fiber internet adoption grows, physical media is increasingly positioned as a niche collectors’ market rather than the standard distribution model.
