The United Kingdom has broken its record for the number of days above 30C in a single year, logging 35 such days in 2026 and surpassing the previous record of 34 set in 1995. The record fell with more than four months of the year still to run, and with another heatwave already forecast for this week.

Frittenden in Kent reached 30.6C on Sunday, tipping the count past the 1995 mark. Several other locations were expected to climb as high as 32C the same day.
What comes next is hotter
Forecasters expect heatwave conditions to develop across the coming week, with highs of around 36C in parts of East Anglia and the South East by Thursday. It would be the fifth heatwave of the year — a frequency that is itself without recent precedent.
The Met Office defines a heatwave as three or more consecutive days on which the daily maximum temperature meets or exceeds a county-specific threshold, ranging from 25C in northern and western areas to 28C in parts of London and the South East. Reaching that bar five times in a single summer means the population has had very little recovery time between events, which matters more for health outcomes than any individual peak temperature.
The dry ground makes the heat worse
The temperature record is arriving on top of an exceptional drought signal. England and Wales recorded their driest July since records began, following two further heatwaves during the same month. Drought conditions and wildfires have both spread as a result.
This combination is not a coincidence — it is a feedback loop. When soil holds moisture, a substantial share of incoming solar energy goes into evaporating water rather than raising air temperature. When the soil is dry, that energy goes almost entirely into heating the air. Parched ground therefore amplifies each successive heatwave, which dries the ground further, which amplifies the next one. It is a large part of why UK summer temperature records in recent years have tended to fall in clusters rather than in isolation.
The same mechanism drives the fire risk. UK wildfires are overwhelmingly vegetation fires on heath, moor and grassland, and the fuel load becomes receptive once the dead grass layer has cured. The country’s fire services are not resourced for sustained wildland firefighting on the scale that repeated dry heatwaves now demand.
And meanwhile, floods in Scotland
The same weather pattern delivering record heat to the South East dumped half a month’s rainfall on north-west Scotland in two days.
That contrast is characteristic of a blocked or heavily meandering jet stream, in which a stationary area of high pressure parks over one part of the country while frontal systems repeatedly track over another. The result is drought and flood simultaneously in the same small island, and it complicates water management considerably: the rain falls where reservoirs are already full, not where they are depleted.
Why the UK feels it more
A high of 36C would be unremarkable in southern Europe and merits little comment in much of the world. In Britain it is genuinely dangerous, for reasons that have nothing to do with the number itself.
UK housing stock is among the oldest in Europe and was built to retain heat, not shed it. Air conditioning is present in a small minority of homes. Recent building-efficiency retrofits — insulation and airtightness — improve winter performance but can worsen summer overheating in dwellings without adequate ventilation or shading. Overheating in top-floor flats is a documented and growing problem.
Infrastructure has similar tolerances. Rail networks impose speed restrictions when track temperatures rise because steel expands and rails can buckle; road surfaces soften; and electricity demand for cooling rises at precisely the time transmission capacity derates in high ambient temperatures.
The health burden falls hardest on older adults, people with cardiovascular or respiratory conditions, and those on medications that impair thermoregulation. Excess deaths during UK heat episodes are counted in the thousands in the worst years, and the toll is concentrated in exactly the housing that cannot be cooled.
Practical steps this week
- Keep windows and curtains closed on the sunny side during the day, and ventilate at night once outdoor air is cooler than indoor air.
- Identify the coolest room in the home and use it during peak afternoon hours.
- Check on older neighbours and anyone living alone — heat deaths cluster among people nobody looked in on.
- Avoid strenuous outdoor activity between roughly 11am and 4pm.
- Do not leave people or animals in parked vehicles, where interior temperatures rise far above ambient within minutes.
The risk to animals during extreme heat is not theoretical, as the deaths of three lions at a Japanese zoo during a record heat wave demonstrated.
The record that matters
Beating 1995 by one day is a headline. The more significant statistic is that the 1995 record stood for three decades, and that it has now been broken in a year that also produced the driest July on record and five separate heatwaves. Single records can be weather. A cluster of simultaneous records across heat, drought and frequency is the shape of a shifted baseline — and with a heatwave forecast for this week, the 35-day count will not stand for long.
